What is neuro-rehab?

Neuro-rehabilitation is the application of methods from neurology, psychiatry, pain medicine (algology), rheumatology, neuropsychology, physical and rehab medicine, and general medicine, to improve the functioning, and thus the lives, of patients who have had injuries to some part of their nervous system.  These conditions can include injury to the brain itself, injuries to muscles and the nerves therein, injuries to the spinal cord, and injuries to peripheral nerves and the joints they innervate.

The common denominator across all of the above conditions is that they all result in some degree of loss of function in the patients they afflict.  That is, they reduce the patient's ability to go about their lives in a normal manner.  The condition might limit the patient's ability to communicate or perform cognitive tasks.  It might limit the patient's ability to walk for any distance, or to lift normal objects.  It might destroy the patient's ability to grasp and hold objects, or it might cause in inability to perform one's normal work activities or those around the home.

Neuro-rehab attempts to restore the functions lost to the disabling disease or condition.  This is done through the use of medications, taken orally or injected into target regions (e.g. joints), electromedicine interventions, physical therapy, guided exercise programs, nutritional counseling, and paced re-entry into former activities.  Also, neuro-rehab involves directly treating co-morbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and obesity, that literally combine with the disabling condition to further disable the patient and reduce function.
